Everybody who has ever tried their hand at affiliate marketing has made the same mistake at least once - you find the most awesome product and you just know, all the way down to your toes, that it’s going to be the next “Hot Product”. Surely everyone on the planet will be looking for this. Why didn’t you think of this before?! Hurry! Build a website! People want to throw money your way!
It doesn’t matter what YOU think about the product. You may think it’s the next best thing since sliced bread. (By the way - the bread slicer was a complete dud when it was first introduced!) No affiliate marketer worth his salt builds a website to promote a product without finding out first if there’s even a market for that product.
How do you find out if anyone is interested in this wonderful product? Your first place to look is the Google Keyword Tool. This is where you can find out exactly how many people have come online looking for information about that product you just found.
Let’s say you just tripped over an awesome Blue Baby Bonnet - the most beautiful Blue Baby Bonnet you’ve ever seen. Type the words ‘Blue Baby Bonnet’ into the box under “Find Keywords” and hit “Search”. When the results come up, scroll further down the page and, in the column on the left, check “Exact” and uncheck “Broad”. You want to know exactly how many people are coming online looking for Blue Baby Bonnets.
And you’re going to find that there were only 36 people worldwide who, during the last month, typed that exact keyword phrase into their Google search box. Now, unless you’re confident you can sell that bonnet to all 36 people the NEXT time they search, then you haven’t found a very good product. Apparently, not everyone is as interested in a Blue Baby Bonnet as you thought they would be.
However, you’ll also notice that 1300 people searched using the keyword ‘bonnet baby’, 1600 people used ‘knit baby hats’ and so on. So there are people searching for information on baby bonnets in general. As long as you don’t have too much competition, you’ll probably be very successful building a website that promotes a variety of baby bonnets, with blue baby bonnets being one of them.
You would not, however, want to build a website around the keyword “Bonnet”. While there are over 90,000 searches per month, you’ll never be able to provide information on all the different types of bonnets available and you’ll have far too much competition.
